Homemade Hummus

What Is Hummus?

Hummus is a Mediterranean dip or spread originating from Middle Eastern Countries. It is a savoury dish made from garbanzo beans or chickpeas, lemon or lime juice, fresh garlic, usually Tahini, olive oil and garnished with fresh parsley and paprika. It is a healthy snack usually eaten with toasted pita bread triangles, vegetable sticks, crackers or however you like.

I was introduced to this delicious dip living here in Jamaica as we have have a lot of Mediterranean nationals living here and restaurants, so their food has become popular and well liked. It is sold ready made in these restaurants and also some supermarkets, but I found it to be quite pricey.

Through the love of creating my own homemade versions of most things, I realized it was very simple to make, would be so much cheaper, and tastes way better. A common ingredient in a lot of hummus recipes is tahini, which is basically  sesame seeds and olive oil. As you will notice, I substitute those in my recipe in place of the tahini.

So, did I mention how quick and easy this is to make?

You basically measure out and place all ingredients except 1 Tbsp. of the olive oil, fresh parsley and the paprika in your blender or food processor and blend on puree until nice and creamy and smooth.

When finished it should be slightly thick with some body but if if it is too thick to blend, you can add a little more liquid at a time.

Smooth out in the bowl you will store it in and pour 1 Tbsp. or a little more of olive oil on top, sprinkle your paprika and fresh chopped parsley.

Store in fridge.
