Easy Chinese Sweet & Sour Fish Fillets
This is a easy way of making restaurant quality sweet & sour fish using fish fillets. The fried fish will be nice and crispy on the outside and soft and tender on the inside paired with an amazing homemade sweet and sour sauce to give you a perfect meal.
I find this meal is a winner all around for fish lovers and even for the not fish lovers because the comes out so tasty. My whole family loves this dish so when making it, I have to make extra as everyone wants seconds! This also makes a quick & easy weeknight meal.
Ingredients for Fish
- Fish – Cod, snapper, basa, butter fish fillets (Jamaica), or any fillet of choice that is not too flaky
- Salt – (not pictured)
- Baking Powder
- Flour
- Corn Starch
- Oil
Ingredients for Sauce
- Sugar
- Apple Cider Vinegar
- Pineapple Juice
- Ketchup
- Worcestershire Sauce
- Oyster Sauce
- Light Soy Sauce
- Salt
- Water
- Corn Starch
- Pineapples
- Onion
- Sweet Green or Red Bell Pepper
Preparation Steps

- Wash fish and pat semi-dry.
- Combine flour, salt, baking powder and cornstarch on a plate or in a large bowl.
- When ready to fry, using a large non-stick skillet, heat on medium-high with oil.
- Place fish 1 at a time in cornstarch mixture until covered well.
- Fry a few pieces at a time for about 4 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
- Line a serving plate with paper towel to place fried fish on.
- To make the sauce, place all ingredients except the cornstarch in a small saucepan, stir together and bring to a boil on medium-high heat.
- Dilute cornstarch in a little water and add to sauce when sauce is boiling, keep stirring for a minute or two until slightly thickens.
- Dip fish pieces in sauce when ready to serve.

Easy Sweet & Sour Fish
Ingredients
Fish
- 2 lbs. Fish Fillet
- 1/2 tsp. Baking Powder
- 1 tsp. Salt
- 1/2 cup Flour
- 1 cup Cornstarch
- 1 cup Oil
Sweet & Sour Sauce
- 2/3 cup White Sugar
- 1/3 cup Apple Cider Vinegar
- 1/3 cup Pineapple Juice
- 1/4 cup Ketchup
- 2 tsp. Worcestershire Sauce
- 2 tsp. Oyster Sauce
- 3 Tbsp. Light Soy Sauce
- 1/4 tsp. Salt
- 1 cup Water from can of beans
- 1/2 cup Pineapple pieces
- 1/4 cup Onion slices or chunks
- 1/4 cup Sweet Bell Pepper chunks
- 1-1/2 Tbsp. Cornstarch
Instructions
Fish

Wash and cut fish fillets to desired pieces.

Combine Flour, cornstarch, baking powder and salt together in a large plate or bowl.

Dip fish pieces to fully cover in flour mixture.

Heat a large non-stick skillet on medium-high heat with oil until hot.

Fry a couple pieces of fish at a time about 4 minutes on each side or until brown. Remove to a paper towel lined platter.
Sweet & Sour Sauce

Combine all ingredients except cornstarch in a small saucepan on medium-high heat and bring to a boil.

Dilute cornstarch in a small amount of water and add to sauce when boiling.
Stir for 1 to 2 minutes until slightly thickens.

Dip fish pieces in sauce when ready to serve.
Recipe Notes
* Fish pieces can be re-heated in a air fryer or toaster oven before dipping in sauce to serve.
